Has this ever happened to you? You bring your digital images to the print lab and ask for 5 x 7 prints and when you compare them to you original photo files, you have parts cropped out? Now why is that? Did the lab screw up?
Basically, the aspect ratio of your original image isn’t the same as the aspect ratio of the print. Ok, before I go any further, let me explain “aspect ratio”. Aspect ratio is a measurement of the proportion of your image. The largest side divided by the smallest side of your image will give you Continue Reading »

I’ve been asked by quite a few of you on how to soften skin in Photoshop. So I thought that I’d show you the steps I use to soften skin. Contrary to what many photographers use which is the Gaussian Blur filter, I prefer to use the Surface Blur filter.
I actually show both techniques in this photography tutorial so that you can try both and see the results side by Continue Reading »

It’s time for another Photoshop video tutorial “quicky”.
In this simple but effective photography tutorial, I’ll show you how to increase the power of the emotions conveyed in your images by adding a simple filter already in Photoshop. Of course, this technique works best to accentuate emotions of love, romance and friendship. We’re actually giving our images a warm, fuzzy feeling… fuzzy being the Continue Reading »

It’s time for another Adobe Photoshop video tutorial “quicky”.
I went thought my reader email bag and had quite a few of you wanting to know how to fix the color issues when saving images from Photoshop. The main complaint is that saved images, when viewed on the computer or the Web, look more saturated then what you see in Photoshop. Basically you’re asking: a) why is it that the saved image is more saturated? and, b) is there a way to adjust Photoshop to see the correct Continue Reading »

Welcome to a Photoshop “video quicky” tutorial. It’s funny cuz I got a request from a reader on how to quickly straighten a horizon on a photo without having to fiddle around and guestimate using the Arbitrary option under Rotate Canvas (Image-Rotate Canvas-Arbitrary). I actually had to think about it for a moment since I’ve been using Lightroom 2 to rotate and crop my images for a while now.
It only did take a moment and Continue Reading »

I’m a guy of my word so, as promised at the end of my Exploring Small Strobes - Why Should I Use a Speedlight? I’ll go through both the lighting setup and the post processing to get the final intro image you see here.
You can see my other lighting setup tutorials HERE.
Studio & Lighting Setup
Let’s start with the studio setup. For the background, I used black cotton fabric. I would have preferred seamless paper but… I don’t have any because I never saw the use since I never shot light directly on a black Continue Reading »

Here we go with another cool Photoshop video tutorial. In this video, we’ll look at a different way to sharpen photos. You might be used to using the Unsharp Mask or Smart Sharpen filters in Photoshop which do a relatively good job.
But this time I’ll show you a way using the high pass filter. It’s just as fast and I personnaly think it’ more versatile and a lot less Continue Reading »

Welcome to a new Photoshop video tutorial at Yanik’s Photo School. I’ve had a couple of requests on a tutorial focused on changing the specific color of a subject, like turning a green apple purple. So I went ahead and did it. You see, my suggestion box really does work. Ask and you shall should receive.
I’ll show you 3 different ways of changing a subject’s color. I’m sure there are many more but in this tutorial, I’ll focus on Continue Reading »
