Fill Flash

Fill flash is a lighting technique used to brighten or eliminate deep shadow areas in high contrast scenes. The technique is used mostly if the subject is underexposed in a back lit situation or on a bright background. The typical fill flash technique starts by correctly exposing the background and then using a flash to lighten the subject or foreground.

Here’s an example of fill flash using an off camera Speedlight.
