your cameras metering system thinks in grey.

It always want to expose the shot in mid-grey.

Simplest example; 

if you shoot snow, its white.  So you need to compensate else your snow is grey.  +
If you shoot black, then you need to compensate else the black turn grey.  -</description>

Without that, the performers&#039; skin was ghostlike, and color of their costumes was washed out. EV made difference between throw away and eye-popping shots.
