A great tutorial, one which I will refer to my students. Also to clarence king, I agree with yanik - adobe bridge is clunky and lightroom is far more useful. If you don`t want/don`t have money to spend on lightroom I recommend downloading picasa from google. It is free and it quite easy to use.

Hi there,
I did that and it then distorts the images. What I need is for the image to remain in proportion but to be cropped, I guess, to a square. I have managed to do it by resizing the canvas and that seems to work well enough.
Thank you for your response,

@ Jeanne

Just go into Image Size and resize to 128 x 128 while you're recording your action.

Hi,
I need to resize a range of images so that they are 128 x 128 px square thumbnails. The images I need to resize are all different sizes. Is there a way I can create an action to constrain images into a square thumbnail?

Oh :(

I have a bunch of photos (landscape and portrait, and different aspect ratios) that I need to resize so their *shortest* edge is 80px, so that I can crop the canvas to 80x80px and have a square thumbnail...

Can I do that with a batch CS3 action? :s
