Photoshop Video Tutorial – High Pass Sharpening
Here we go with another cool Photoshop video tutorial. In this video, we’ll look at a different way to sharpen photos. You might be used to using the Unsharp Mask or Smart Sharpen filters in Photoshop which do a relatively good job.
But this time I’ll show you a way using the high pass filter. It’s just as fast and I personnaly think it’ more versatile and a lot less destructive. Enjoy!
I invite you to post your High Pass Filter images on Yanik’s Photo School’s Flickr group. ![]()

Great! I’ve never heard of this before.. will definitely try it out instead of usm.
Thanks Yanik!
I would just add that if you wanted to selectivly apply this, rather than mask what you don’t want sharpened, it may be easier to mask the entire layer in black, then paint back in with white where you do want it such as the eyes only.
Thanks Yanik. It’s just nice & easy.
Interesting Yanik. I’ve never liked the destructive look of Unsharp Mask. I have used Fred Miranda’s Intellisharpen II with success. I’m curious if his routine incorporates any High Pass sharpening.
Great tutorial!
Thanks Yanik. I’ve never think of this before. Its really more effective than simple unsharpmask technique. Thanks again, kind regards from Turkei =)
Many thanks Yanik for a great tutorial; nice and simple yet very effective with total control.
Hi Yanik, thanks for the tutorial~ I just wondering is there any sharpening technique that would not increase the noise of the photo?
Excellent and easy to understand. Thanks. I also LOVED your copyright and logo tutorial, I’ve been trying to figure that out for a while. Thanks for sharing so much. : >
Thanks a bunch.. simple and to the point.. AWESOME!!
Thanks again.
